Fryer Conor Lynn
led us in a line
we walked at dawn
roughly organized
no one looked the other in the eye
as we reached the mounds
only whispering voices when
the shovels came out
and so we opened the ground
we just had to know
holding up a spade
"now, that's enough", said he
"let's return these people
where they can lay in peace"
"they were struck by the almighty
you can see it in their limbs
and the evils that led to this
we mustn't ever defend."
we had to see it ourselves
we just had to know
from another line
a skeptic arose
shaking his head
holding up a bone
looking around him
he pointed with his hand
"this is curious," said he
"but I understand"
"if they were struck by the almighty
you would see it in their limbs
and the logic that led us here
we mustn't repeat again
and with all of the deeper tissues
petrified still
it's clear the enemy's just the frozen ground
under the hill."
but neither made sense
so we went on
believing no one at all
sleep for now
lay down your heavy eyes
let your mind walk
and your breath fill the skies
may your world
be more peaceful than mine
may your world
